Environmental policy

As part of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a registered charity, we are passionate about our environmental policy and the well-being of our staff and customers, keeping every part of our service flexible and adaptable.

All venues in the IET Venues group are fully committed to reducing their impact on the environment, and as such IET Glasgow: Teacher Building has adopted the following approach across all events.

How are we reducing our environmental impact?

  • We have been awarded a Gold accreditation by the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS)
  • The Carbon Trust have declared our city-centre venue as being carbon neutral. When you hold your event with us, we offset your carbon footprint
  • We operate an on-site water purification system to eliminate unnecessary water bottle transportation
  • We rigorously turn off all lighting and air conditioning when not in use
  • We promote our video conferencing facilities for both internal and external events to reduce unnecessary travel
  • We use low energy light bulbs wherever possible
  • We use Fairtrade products for the majority of Teas and Coffees served

We continue to explore ways to reduce paper within IET Glasgow: Teacher Building and the IET Venues Group:

  • We will continue to make the process from enquiry through to final invoice one which is paperless
  • We no longer produce a venue brochure as all relevant information can be found on the website
  • We have added new links to the website to help our customers find information on travelling to the venue, things to see and do around Glasgow and to enable customers to choose healthier, cleaner and cheaper journeys

What can you do to help?

Be a responsible visitor - seven things you can do to help save the planet:

  1. Conserve energy - Reduce energy by switching off lights and closing windows if the heating is on. The Energy Saving Trust provides information on what you can do at home
  2. Give the car a rest - Leave the car behind, if only for a day. Walk, cycle or use public transport. See our transport page for directions
  3. Shop local - Use local products, they give you a flavour of the area and help support local communities. We are fortunate to have some fantastic producers of food, drink and arts and crafts in our region. Ask about local markets or local and regional organic produce
  4. Reduce, reuse and recycle - Try to avoid overly packaged goods and say no to that extra carrier bag. Try and recycle any waste you have. Every space in our venue has recycling bins for different materials to support you in this
  5. Be water wise - Please use water wisely. Turn off the tap fully - whether you had turned it on in the first place or not!
  6. Respect nature - Help us look after the landscape and wildlife by not littering, guarding against fire and using footpaths and cycle-ways responsibly
  7. Support Green Tourism Businesses - There are hundreds of businesses trying to reduce their environmental impacts through the GTBS. Businesses are awarded Bronze, Silver or Gold for their efforts to be more environmentally responsible
